How did the French help Vietnam when they ruled Vietnam?

In short they didn’t help at all. They created artificial boundaries in southeast asia and in turn created border conflicts. French colonialism in Vietnam resulted in 2 wars between the french and Vietnamese, and a result of the French defeat dragged the US into their war in Vietnam.
The only positives the french brought to the country was culinary influences and architecture.

It didn’t help, Vietnam was perfectly happy being a tributary to China before France came along, and either protested/fought against imperialism the entire time the French were there.
