How do you find out if someone really served IN Vietnam?
June 25, 2009 - Posted in Vietnam Vacation
I am not a potential employer, or immediate family. Is there anyway to verify WHERE someone served during the Vietnam war?
Someone I know used to claim to have never left the States, but now is getting sympathy by representing he saw action IN Vietnam. I find it disrespectful to veterans who were actually traumatized in combat there to use service at home during the same time period to excuse bad behaviour now and to manipulate sympathy.
How can I find out which version of those years is true?
You can file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the National Personnel Records Center and obtain the following:
Name
Service Number
Dates of Service
Branch of Service
Rank and Date of Rank
Salary *
Assignments and Geographical Locations
Source of Commission *
Military Education
Promotion Sequence Number *
Awards and decorations (Eligibility only, not actual medals)
Duty Status
Photograph
Transcript of Court-Martial Trial
Place of entrance and separation
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/foia-info.html is a good link.
His awards and decorations will tell you what you need to know. If he really has been there and done that, he'll have at least one medal or ribbon to back the story up…if nothing, the Vietnam Service Medal will let you know he served there or near there in support of Vietnam operations.

That information is not a matter of public information.
You could challenge him and ask to see his military orders to report to Vietnam, but I doubt that will go anywhere.
