How do you immigrate to Vietnam legally?
February 5, 2009 - Posted in Vietnam Vacation
I have been looking for an answer on how to legally immigrate to Vietnam from the United States. I can only find tourist of business visa information, neither of which fit what I want to do. I also seem to only be getting "How to immigrate to the U.S.A from Vietnam.
I want to legally be able to get a job in Vietnam, and work there without having to leave again, or at least have to renew bi-annually.
I want permanent status, not just temporary visitor or tourist, if it is possible.
Also, no questions asking "Why?", please.
Not a good idea, unless you want to eat rice at low price

Not possible. They do not want Americans or any others to immigrate.
Visit their embassy to validate this opinion.

The Vietnamese government is, rightfully so, interested in providing employment for VN nationals, not foreigners. However, they are opening up a bit on that front.
You can get a business visa which is good for one year – and then you need to renew it. Alternatively, you can try to get hired for a foreign organization and have them sponsor you – your visa will be renewable on a yearly basis, up to the date that your contract expires.
You can marry a VN national, which gets you residency.
If you are Viet kieu I think you may qualify for special visa treatment as well, but that one I have no information on.
I understand there are diplomats who have retired to Viet Nam, but I don't know what their visa status is.

Viet Nam is definitely an interesting place with wonderful people, but if you haven't been there yet I recommend you pay a visit before putting much effort into getting to live there without having a contact to take you there.

First of all, I'd like to say that a great number of VNese just want to travel to and immigrate to the US or some other developed country, and very few foreigners like to do in the opposite direction. There are a lot of reasons for this. If VN were a paradise, then millions of illegal immigrants would cross its border every year.
So, are you sure that you want to have permanent status in VN? Please think again carefully. It is quite easy to get a visa and travel from a rich to a poor country, but definitely not vice versa. People from rich countries often take this for granted and they do not understand the difficulties and sometimes inferiority complexity with which citizens from the developing world have to experience when applying for a visa.
You can come to VN and work there for some time, as a medical / management / financial / computer consultant, in the private or public sector in Saigon. These are some of the fields they currently need help most. You can also work for the newly opened elementary, secondary, and high schools in the city where English is the medium of instruction. Just make a trip to Saigon, apply for an English teaching job there and, after six months or so, you will gradually realize what you should do next. I hope this helps.
