How importnant is taking Malaria tablets in Cambodia and Vietnam for 1 months stay?
March 30, 2009 - Posted in Vietnam Vacation
I will be travelling Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam for 1 month from the 20th November. I normally get attacked my mosquito's in Australia, so am very scared of not taking the tablets. But I dont have a lot of money as they are very expensive. I just think, because the tablets aren't guarenteed to protect you 100 percent, it is better to just be careful.
What do you think?
Definitely take the pills!
Tropical diseases are not to trifle with…until the advent of modern medicine, people died from these on a REGULAR BASIS!!!
If you can afford the plane ticket to go travel, you can afford the few extra $$$ in precautions.
Cheers

Definitely important, if you are traveling in the areas of the country with malaria risk, which is most areas of the countries you are visiting. Many cases of malaria are imported into the US every year. You can get good information from the CDC website; look for travelers' health. Since there is drug resistance to mefloquine in some of these areas, either atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline are recommended. The former is the expensive one. You might want to ask your doctor if you could take doxycycline- it is much cheaper but has more side effects. Also make sure you are up to date on vaccinations especially polio and Hepatitis A. Have a nice trip!
