What role did the anti-Vietnam War protests play in forging America’s identity?

The 70s was a tumultuous time of hippies, anticulture, Civil Rights movements, and of course, the Vietnam War.
How did the dire, and often violent, anti-war protests help to shape the identity of America?
During WWI and WWII we were like the heros. Korea was just o/k but I don't think we ever got over the shame of losing the vietnam war. The comunists won. Now North Korea and China all up in our space all like "Who's the home of the brave now, yo" Even though we are [and always will be] that loss of Vietnam was a crushing blow to our dignity
