Will my mom get captured by the Vietnamese government if she visits Vietnam after escaping as a refugee to USA?

April 23, 2010 - Posted in Vietnam Vacation

My mom escaped Vietnam when she was a teenager w/ her family during the Vietnam War. Now at 47 years old, if she goes to visit Vietnam this March to see dying relatives, will she get recaptured? Or hurt? Will she be in any danger?

No of course not. I know lots of refugees (boat and plane) that have gone to Vietnam and came back home just fine. The vietnamese government does not have any policy on people that have escaped their government or fought against them. If they were, the first people they would capture would be the ex-soldiers that fought on the south side, right? Secondly, if that were the case, not a lot of people would go back home since the majority of the people living in the states were originally refugees. Trust me, as long as your mom doesn’t go around bad-mouthing the government or doing anything illegal, she will be just fine.

  2. Viet Nam is courting tourists and usually welcome former residents, even U.S. soldiers who fought there. Since your mom was a teenager when she left with her family there is no reason the government will have any interest in her.
There are even former troops living there now, so she should go see her relatives while they are still alive.

  3. My next door neighbor was a former refugee. When I went to visit the first time some years ago, he told me to be careful, warned me about police and evil government spies and so forth. He told me that for many years he wanted to go back to Vietnam to visit with family, but was too scared.

After I returned from my holiday there, I shared with him my photos and experiences. I was able to advise him he would be completely safe if he visited.

Well he did so, but told me that in the days leading up to his flight to Vietnam, he had difficulty sleeping and when he left, kissed his wife and kids goodbye believing he might be imprisoned upon arrival.

When he returned to Australia, he told me that when he went through customs/immigration at the airport, the official shook his hand and welcomed him home.

He now goes back to visit family twice a year in perfect safety.

Also, the Vietnam Government is now a member of the World Trade Organization and actively encourage ex-pat Vietnamese to return and invest in business in Vietnam.

Do not worry. The war and it’s attitudes are long passed.
